A good mattress is very important for a good night’s sleep. The feeling you experience when you lie on it is important. Not too hard, not too soft, and above all very supportive for your body. But don’t forget to look at the size. Of course, your bed must fit in your bedroom, lack of space can be crucial when choosing a mattress size. But even if a larger bed fits into your space, bigger isn’t always better. It all depends on how you prefer to sleep.

Depending on how many people you sleep in the bed, there are a number of standard mattress sizes. If you are more than two meters tall yourself, a mattress of that length will of course not sleep very well. And if you move a lot, more space is also nice. Fortunately, in addition to the standard mattress sizes, there are also mattresses that are extra wide, long, short or narrow. Also read which different bed sizes there are.
The smallest mattresses are only 70 centimeters wide and 190 centimeters long, for a single bed. Mattresses for baby and children’s beds are of course even smaller. The largest mattresses for double beds are 200 centimeters wide and 220 centimeters long.
The standard size for a single mattress is 90×200 cm. You can also opt for a narrower mattress of 80 or even 70 cm wide. The length can be adjusted to 190, 210 or 220 cm. All combinations of that width and length are possible.
Would you rather have a large single mattress, or enough space for two in a cosy, small bed? Choose a French bed that falls right in between a 1-person and 2-person mattress. In terms of length, you can of course choose from 190, 200, 210 or 220 cm. For the width, the choice is 100 or 120 cm.
A standard 2 person mattress is 180×200 cm. If you prefer to lie closer together, you can also choose a width of 140 or 160 cm. Extra space is possible with a width of 200 cm. Lengths of 190, 200, 210 and 220 cm are also possible for 2-person mattresses, in combination with all four widths.
The most important tip when choosing the size of your mattress is to pay attention to the height of the tallest person who sleeps in it. Add at least 20 centimeters to that, so that the person can lie comfortably stretched out in it. There are no feet sticking out and there is enough room for the head.
If you move a lot, a wider bed is nice. For yourself, so that you don’t (partly) fall out, but also for your bed partner who is less bothered by your tossing and turning. Are you not the type to accidentally kick or hit your partner in the night, but do you like to snuggle up against each other? Then you can opt for a narrower bed. This can also be ideal if you have less space in the bedroom. When choosing a 2-person mattress, you can also go for a mattress with two different cores, one soft and one firm, tailored to your needs. Are you planning to order a new mattress online?
