Cleaning a Mattress with Blood Stain

A bloodstain in your mattress is something that can easily happen. A small wound that you have not noticed or a leakage during menstruation are accidents that you can sometimes not prevent. Still, these are nasty accidents. Most people don’t know how to get blood out of your mattress. If your first reaction is to immediately throw the mattress cover in the washing machine and wash it at 60 degrees, it is good that you read this article. Washing with a washing machine is usually done automatically at 40 degrees or even more. This is exactly what you should not do if you want to clean your mattress from blood stains. By using warm or lukewarm water, the proteins in the blood clot and you can hardly get the stains out. Often the blood stains also become brownish and larger when you wash with warm water.

How do you get blood out of a mattress?

We now know that if you want to get blood stains out of your mattress, you don’t immediately throw the cover in the washing machine and wash it as hot as possible. But then what?

• If you want to get blood out of your mattress, you always use cold water! Especially if the stain is new, you can solve a large part of the problem by soaking the stain in cold water. If this is not enough, you can then throw the mattress cover in the washing machine and wash it with a cold program!
• If the blood stain is fresh and therefore still wet with blood, you can start by sprinkling the area with salt and letting it soak in for a while. This draws the still moist blood from your mattress into the salt. You can then vacuum the salt off the mattress with a vacuum cleaner. An additional tip is to dilute salt with a little water to a kind of paste and rub it over the blood stain with a cloth. The paste therefore acts as a kind of absorbent scouring sponge.
• A common tip to get blood out of your mattress is to soak the stain for a few hours in cold water containing baking soda. Then wash the cover on a cold program to wash out the baking soda.
• Dissolve aspirins in cold water to remove blood stains. This is also a frequently mentioned piece of advice among grandma’s tips for cleaning blood from the mattress.
• Furthermore, the internet is full of tips to remove blood stains with milk or saliva. We have not tried this ourselves and find it somehow illogical. Research shows that breast milk and saliva help blood to clot. This is exactly what you don’t want if you want to clean the mattress from blood. Probably that the effect of cow’s milk has the opposite effect. However, we cannot find any substantiation for this.

Remove old blood stains from mattress

Removing dried blood stains from a mattress seems like an impossible task. Fortunately, even with old blood stains on your mattress, you don’t have to throw in the towel. A common and proven way to remove old blood stains from your mattress is to apply a mixture of two tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide and one tablespoon of dish soap to the blood stain with a cloth. You can then gently scrub the area with a small brush such as a toothbrush. Then leave it on for a few hours. Then wipe off the residue with a cloth and rinse the mattress cover well with cold water.
