How long does a mattress last? Check the average lifespan here!

What is the life span of a mattress? Your mattress is the product you have the most physical contact with on average. Therefore, it is important to know how long your mattress will last without losing support and comfort. An average mattress lasts 7 to 10 years and regular cleaning has a positive effect on its lifespan. In addition to cleaning it properly, it is very important to know the materials used in your mattress.

Mattress life

The life of your mattress is largely determined by the quality of the materials used. In addition, the number of sleeping hours has an effect on the life of your mattress. Below we show how long the materials last on average. Note that most luxury mattresses have a combination of different foams.

How long a cold foam mattress lasts

Cold foam mattresses are the absolute winner with 10-12 years of life expectancy. It has an open cell structure that provides resilience and malleability. However, not every cold foam mattress is the same. A good quality cold foam has a high HR value (HR35+) and a high polyol value. The latter, however, is difficult to ascertain. Usually the more expensive cold foam mattresses or cold foam mattresses that are delivered compact (rolled up) have a higher polyol value.

How long a pocket spring mattress lasts

Most pocket spring mattresses last at least 8-10 years. The quality of the spring steel has a major influence on this. Poorer qualities will suffer more quickly from material fatigue and loss of resilience than the better qualities. You can’t tell from the outside. The edges, which will be made of foam, may also differ in quality. Often this foam is of inferior quality to that of a mattress made entirely of foam.

How long a memory foam mattress lasts

A memory foam mattress lasts about 8 to 10 years. But again, the quality is of great influence. Memory foam moulds very well to the body but has less resilience than cold foam. In the course of time, pitting can occur. With poorer qualities, a memory foam mattress will therefore not last as long. Usually a high HR value means a good quality and therefore a longer life.

How long a Latex mattress lasts

Latex mattresses are not known for their durability. They have a poor ability to withstand salt and friction. Therefore, a latex mattress lasts on average about 6-8 years. It also depends on how much the mattress has to endure. Have you just found a new bed partner you’re very enthusiastic about? Then a latex mattress may not be the best option.

How long an innerspring mattress lasts

Innerspring mattresses are not sold as much these days, but they can usually take a beating. Depending on the quality of the spring steel used, you can expect a lifespan of 6 to 8 years. Some, however, dare to keep these mattresses for decades. Your sleeping quality just doesn’t get any better.

How long a polyether mattress lasts

This is the last mattress to choose if you are going for durability. A “good” polyether mattress will last 5 years at most. Polyether has a closed cell structure that easily breaks and degrades. So you will quickly get pitting and in some cases it will no longer provide the right support within a year.

What is the life span of a mattress topper

There are several reasons why it may be a good idea to use a topper on your mattress. First of all, a topper extends the life of the mattress because it doesn’t put any direct strain on it. In addition, a topper captures a lot of moisture and dander. Handy, because a topper is a lot easier to wash. Because the topper is used more intensively, its average lifespan is 4 to 5 years. Note! This of course also depends on the type and quality of the material from which the topper is made.
